it shouldn’t be a problem, my brother is a marine and he’s pretty short. when we went to his graduation from boot at Camp Pendleton i found that, surprisingly, most of them were shorter than i, and i was only 15
Most of the Seals in the U.S. Navy are not physically large people. They are extremely fit and recieve the very best training in all forms of combat. So your stature is not going to be an issue. Also you have more growing time ahead of you. I know that I was 4’11′ when I was 14 and 5’5″ when I was 16 and now at 40 I am 6’0″. I grew 3 inches after I turned 18.
5’6″ is already the minimum height need to become a Marine Corps officer
You don’t need to worry about it.
You’ll have a dedicated marksman who will take out the 6’4″ gorrilla from 100 meters or so. Don’t sweat it. Even if you get into SEAL school, your chances of making it all the way to the Trident are damn thin. It ain’t the size of the dog in the fight, its the size of the fight in the dog. (with apologies to Michael Vick)
Edit: should have read “with apologies to Michael Vick’s dogs” Thank you, Scott D., as Vick is a piece of $hit. With his money and stature in the NFL, why would he participate in such cruelty.
i agree completely with WOP2_99, except for the apologizing to Michael Vick part… he deserves to be in jail
when you join any branch you must remember, they teach you everything you need to know, they assume you know nothing when you join
No it’s not a problem. One of my husband’s teammates is shorter than that. The only thing is you do have to keep up with everyone and yes it can be done. He works extra hard in running .
You’re talking about hand to hand combat? what makes you think you will get that close to him in the first place?
5’6 is not short dude. I **** it when people cry for being not short and not tall. if you were actually smart you’ll know that seals are not big and tough football players, they are average 5’9 with lots of endurance. if you even make it to buds you’ll be on teh smurfs team.
No, it won’t be a problem. I actually remember reading once (wish I could remember where) that the average special forces height (out of all the branches) is actually less than the average height of the rest of the American population. They explained the likely reason why that is; I just don’t remember the reason. I think it had to do with shorter people had better leverage due to their shorter arms/legs for the common tasks in training. I don’t really know for sure, being I was never in any special forces. What I do know for a fact is that your height will have almost nothing to do with your success in BUD/S, it will have everything to do with your determination. I don’t care how fit you are, if you can’t handle it mentally, you are out.
As far as taking someone down that’s 6’4”, if you make it through BUD/S, you will be able to take down just about anyone, provided they don’t have similar training.
You seem to have some kind of problem being 5/6″ tall.
Same answer… there’s nothing wrong with that height. I used to know this girl who was about 5’2″ tall and she could kick over 6’6″… almost a foot and a half over her head… and there was power behind it.
Not all SEALs are over 6′ tall. I was in the Navy 25 years and have known a few SEALs. I don’t recall any under 5′, but I’ve known a few that were down there. And I don’t think I’ve known any over about 6’4″ either. As as I said before. There’s a range of heights.
And, since you’re only 16, you still might put on an inch or so in the next couple of years. And if you don’t… don’t sweat it. Your height will be one of the least of your worries.
Addenda:
It’s not all about “taking down the big guy.” Believe me, you’ll be trained to if you have to. But SEALs today learn a kind of controlled response to a situation. The let the bad guy determine how he wants it to go down. And they’re ready to ramp it up to whatever level is necessary.
I hope you’ll pardon me for saying it, but if you want to be SEAL, you might want to look less at reasons you might not succeed. I believe you’ll find that’s an indicator of somebody who’s destined to ring out. If you make it to Coronado, they’ll give you a whole lot of reasons you might not succeed… you really don’t need to supply your own.
No, might even be an asset. Easier pull-ups and push-ups.
