Yes, partly because of the nature of submarine work (cramped, tough, undersea service) but also because quite a lot of skilled submariners don’t renew their contracts with the ADF and seek more lucrative jobs with civilian organizations that have need for their experience.
The Royal Australian Navy hasn’t had conscription for decades – and even then, one had a choice between the three services.
Submarine service is a prestigeious occupation in the Navy. If you want to serve on a submarine, you’ll have to apply with the ADF, select some Navy jobs you’re interested in (things like Marine Technician or Cook would probably be eligible for submarines) and inform your recruiter and interviewing officer you are interested in submarine service.
Direct-entry submarine service is a relatively new thing – not that long ago, applicants needed 12 months of service in the regular Navy.
The Australian Navy is short of people downright. Only made 77% of there target for recruitment, And even that doesnt count the people who leave.
Now is a good day to seize the bull by the horns.
I have J.O.E.S day in 2 weeks, i am really considering changing from Army to Navy
