*Pants* asked:

He said they are really backed up, apparently there is a joining frenzy of some sort. He said it could be shorter if people from other classes drop out before me. Do you think it will really take a year? If people responding joined the navy can you tell me how long before you signed and you left…..

I would think it would depend on what rate you have selected. Some rates there is no wait, while others there is a wait. It’s called “Delayed Entry” and is nothing new. One benefit of delayed entry is that it counts towards time served for pay purposes. Meaning you will get paid raises sooner. When I joined in 1983 I had an 8 month and 11 day delayed entry. So when I went to active duty and went to Boot camp, I go over 1 year for pay puposes in a little over 3 months..

It all depends on what job you signed up for.

He may very well be right.

I had to wait like three months when I joined the Navy, but I had to finish high school.

For the Army, I had to wait like, two months I think.

If you want to go sooner, just join the Army, we will take you sooner!!! Haha..

No, seriously, if you want to go sooner, you may want to talk with him about maybe picking a different job rate, and maybe you can go sooner.

Depending on rate, your area, how many people are joining depending on sex, and whether or not people are really wanting to join up.

If its a matter of rate: if your rate has a certain amount of time in an A school then they can only take so many people at a time. If they have already maxed that out then they are not going to have you go to boot camp just to sit around for 2-6 months after wards.

If its your area/people joining: Your area may have gotten alot of people in, also if there were alot of people joining at once then the computer might have no spots left to award to you if you are interested in getting out.

The best thing you can do is go to MEPS and see for yourself. I know I joined May 28th 2004 and left June 24th 2004. Some people take longer and some people like that. Some people it takes less time. Just depending on what MEPS says.

Recruiters like to lie, they go to school to learn how to lie. Just don’t take everything for face value and check it out.
