I am being told that brown shorts and a black t-shirt do not match. Is this correct? If so, what colors WILL match with brown cargo shorts?

Yeah, haha black and brown don’t really go together..but like it depends what shade of brown..if its dark brown, wear lighter colored shirts, like tan or something. If it’s like a tannish brown, wear darker shirts..but not black
Brown and white are a good match:).
Or maybe a lightish pink..

You mean like these and black is a neutral color that goes with everything. Black most certainly does go with these sorts you could wear black tennis shoes or black flip flops with it. It matches just fine.
Any one of these shirts would also go with the Khaki shorts but I like number 4 the light blue one.
Khaki is also a neutral color that goes with just about anything. Good choice for shorts for real.
