What kind of personnel are you transporting? Marines for an amphibious assault? Transfers to a base outside the United States?

If it’s for an amphibious assault, the Navy uses Amphibious Transport Docks (LPD) and Amphibious Dock Landing (LSD) ships.

According to the US Navy’s 2008 Owners and Operator’s manual, LSDs “support amphibious operations including landings via air LCAC [Air Cushion Landing Craft], conventional landing craft, and helicopters, onto hostile shores.”

LPDs “are used to transport and land Marines, their equipment and supplies by embarked air cushion or conventional landing craft or amphibious vehicles, augmented by helicopters or vertical take off and landing aircraft in amphibious assault, special operations, or expeditionary warfare missions.”

If it’s just a transfer of personnel, most of them get to their destination by aircraft, either commercial airline or military cargo plane.
